Blender sculpting vs ZBrush
This is the comparison everyone runs into within a week of deciding to learn sculpting, and the answers online are unusually partisan. Here is the version without the tribalism — including where each genuinely wins, and the case for starting with neither.
The short answer
ZBrush is deeper and handles very dense meshes better, and remains the industry standard for professional character work. Blender sculpts genuinely well, is completely free including export, and puts sculpting, retopology, UVs, texturing, rigging and rendering in one program. For a beginner, Blender is the better value and ZBrush is the better craft tool — and the skills transfer between them almost entirely.
Where ZBrush is still ahead
Density. ZBrush's engine was built for enormous meshes and still handles tens of millions of polygons more gracefully than anything else, which matters when you are doing a fine detail pass on a hero character. Blender slows down noticeably earlier, though multiresolution helps a great deal.
Depth and specialised tooling. Hundreds of configurable brushes, ZRemesher's quality of automatic retopology, ZModeler, Fibermesh, the ability to work with dozens of subtools in one scene. Much of this is niche, but when you need it there is no substitute.
Pipeline reality. It is what most character studios use, which means tutorials, brush packs, alphas and hiring expectations are all built around it. That network effect is a genuine advantage independent of the software's merits.
Where Blender wins
Cost, obviously and completely: free, forever, including commercial use and export, with no maintenance plan. For anyone learning, that removes the entire question.
Scope. Blender sculpts, retopologises, unwraps, textures, rigs, animates and renders. ZBrush sculpts. A Blender user can take a character from sphere to finished render without leaving the application, while a ZBrush user needs a second and probably a third program for everything after the sculpt.
Interface, arguably. ZBrush's interface is famously idiosyncratic — it predates most modern conventions and does not follow them, and the learning curve is genuinely steeper for reasons that have nothing to do with sculpting. Blender's interface is unusual too, but it is at least conventional in its unusualness.
The case for starting with neither
Both are large desktop applications with an install, a hardware requirement and a learning curve that begins before you make your first stroke. A meaningful share of people who decide to learn sculpting never make one, because they stall at the download, the driver, or the first hour of an interface with several hundred buttons.
If you are not yet sure you want to sculpt, the lowest-friction way to find out is a browser tool. Is Blender good enough for sculpting?
Yes, for the great majority of uses. Blender's sculpt mode has the brushes, multiresolution, dynamic topology and remeshing that real work requires, and plenty of professional artists use it exclusively. Its limits show on extremely dense meshes and in the depth of specialised tooling, not in the fundamentals.
Is ZBrush easier than Blender?
No — the reverse, usually. ZBrush's interface predates modern conventions and does not follow them, and its learning curve is steeper for reasons unrelated to sculpting. What ZBrush is, is deeper: once you are past the interface, it does more.
Should a beginner learn ZBrush or Blender?
Blender, for most people: it is free, it covers the whole pipeline, and sculpting skills transfer to ZBrush later if you end up somewhere that uses it. Learn ZBrush first if you are specifically targeting a character-artist job at a studio you know uses it.
Do sculpting skills transfer between them?
Almost entirely. Brushes have the same names and behaviours, subdivision and dynamic topology work the same way, and masking and symmetry are near-identical concepts. Switching costs you interface familiarity, not craft.
